3 Things to take away from our families

  1. Take away selfishness from our families

    • The key to harmony in families and in any relationship is selfless, unconditional, Godly serving kind of love
  • Submit to one another
    • “Out-do yourselves in honoring one another”        Romans 12:10
    • “Serve one another humbly in love”                Galatians 5:13
  • Selfishness is broken in hands-on moments – serving together

  • Temper tantrum – the child is tying to invert the order – I’m the boss of the family…
    • Never give in
    • Leave them alone or if in public, take them out of the situation
  1. Take away Unwholesome talk

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” Ephesians 4:29

    • Not just swearing
    • Tone
    • Sarcasm means – “to strip the flesh off”
    • Harvard: verbal abuse worse than physical
    • Studies have shown that another person can speak life over a child or a spouse and it can counter the damage of abusive talk… if you’re investing in the lives of our children here, or even a teacher in the public school system, speak life over them. If you’re working with our teens, speak life over them, if you’re a connect group leader, or an usher helping people feel welcome, speak life!

Speaking the right words actually produces endorphins

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23 NIV

  1. Take Away dishonor and exasperation

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.”       Ephesians 6:1-4  NIV

  • first commandment with a promise – children obey
  • Parents don’t provoke
  • Kids – bring honor to your parents by obeying them
  • Parents – things to avoid
    1. not flowing with the times… phones, texting, etc
    2. overcontrol – releasing the reigns at the right time
    3. not encouraging
    4. hostile discipline – stern, angry
    5. passive empty directives – warning but not following through

When you blow it as a parent:

  • ask for forgiveness from God, and from your kids
